Call for Leprosy Research Proposals

Posted on 19 May 2010 by NLR

Netherlands Leprosy Relief invites proposals for leprosy research projects, especially into stigma and discrimination, community-based rehabilitation and the functioning and quality of health services.

Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR) has been providing support for scientific research since the early stages of its existence. The 1980 project budget included an amount equal to 3.9% for scientific research, and this has gradually increased to 14% in 1992. Since 2005 NLR has earmarked an annual budget of € 730,000 for scientific research.

The Board of NLR is advised by a Committee for Scientific Research (CWO), comprising a number of experts, each of whom monitors a particular field of research.

The Committee convenes at least twice yearly. In the autumn a meeting is held to assess all proposals on leprosy research submitted to NLR on their quality, feasibility and relevance, and subsequently the CWO advises the board of NLR on funding these proposals. In the spring, the Committee convenes to discuss progress of supported projects and current issues.

The Committee invites researchers to submit research proposals focussing on one of the following seven research themes:

1.         Reactions and nerve damage

2.         Prevention of disabilities

3.         Early diagnosis of disease and chemotherapy

4.         Incidence and transmission

5.         Community-based rehabilitation

6.         Stigma and discrimination

7.         Functioning and quality of health services

In view of ensuring a balanced research portfolio, research projects related to the last three topics are especially encouraged.

New research proposals should be submitted to the secretariat by Friday 11 June 2010, 10 a.m.  Application forms can be requested from the secretariat as well as NLR’s Research Policy and rebuttal procedure for new research proposals, at the following address:
