People with Disabilities and the Millennium Development Goals
Posted on 1 March 2010 by
Individuals with disabilities are not explicitly mentioned in the Millennium Development Goals, although the World Bank reckons around 10% of the world’s population are living with a disability.
An article published in The Lancet unravels several reasons why persons with disabilities were not included. It has already been widely reported that their non-inclusion will make it impossible to achieve any of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
Nora Ellen Groce and Jean-François Trani of Leonard Cheshire Centre for Disability and Inclusive Development, suggest in their article, that the greatest barrier to inclusion of people with disabilities may be stigma and prejudice, which individuals with disabilities as a result of leprosy are only too acutely aware of.
