On Wednesday 25th January 2012, on the Eve of Republic Day, the President of India, Pratibha Patil announced awardees of the country’s highest civilian awards, the Padma Awards. Among those recognised for their exceptional contributions to social work was Dr P K Gopal for all he has done to help persons affected by leprosy.

Members of the Losheng Youth Alliance and celebrity artists and intellectuals in Taiwan, ROC, have been calling on the Government to protect the Losheng Sanatorium, which has been damaged during excavation works for the construction of a maintenance depot for the new Xinzhuang MRT Line in Taipei.

Bowing to international pressure from leprosy organisations, principally LEPRA Health in Action, the Global Ambassador for the Elimination of Leprosy, the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations, persons affected by leprosy and celebrities, Aardman has announced that they will remove the offensive scene with persons with leprosy in The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!

Progress in overcoming Neglected Tropical Diseases, including leprosy, is reported in WHO’s Update: Working to Overcome the Global Impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases published in late 2011.

Dr Margaret Chan was nominated on 18th January 2012 by WHO’s Executive Board for a second term as Director-General of the organization. This nomination will be submitted to the 65th World Health Assembly for approval in May this year.
