On 24th November 2011 the Dhaka Government repealed the 1898 Leprosy Act that segregated leprosy patients from their families and society because at the time it was believed that leprosy was contagious and incurable.

For the first time in its history, the European Region of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union) will be holding its meeting in Western rather than Eastern Europe. The Conference will be in London 4th – 6th July 2012. The organisers are calling for abstracts to be submitted by 31st January 2012.

In July 2010 the Japanese publisher Koseisha published poetry, essays and fiction by persons affected by leprosy dating from the 1920s in a ten-volume collection. Kathryn Tanaka, a PhD student in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilization at the University of Chicago here shares her knowledge of some of these writings.
