On 28th April 2011 the New England Journal of Medicine published an article revealing that wild armadillos and some persons with leprosy in the southern United States have been found to be infected with the same strain of Mycobacterium leprae, the bacterium that causes leprosy.

Today the World Health Organization is launching a global campaign under the slogan ‘Combat Drug Resistance: No Action Today, No Cure Tomorrow’ with the aim of countering the ever more dangerous threat posed by the growth of antimicrobial resistance. This worldwide problem is hampering the effectiveness of antibiotics in treating serious and life-threatening infections such as malaria, tuberculosis and HIV.

An extensive overview of leprosy, from past to present, is covered in this detailed study published by Tokai University Press of Tokyo. It provides an account of the improvements made in controlling leprosy, through advances in knowledge and progress in curing those affected with Multi-Drug Therapy, which allow for greater concentration these days on tackling the social consequences of leprosy.
