Dr Paul Saunderson, Medical Director of American Leprosy Missions, reports on this summit held 17th – 18th October about the leprosy vaccine research project ALM have been funding at the Infectious Disease Research Institute in Seattle.

At their meeting in October, 2011 the ILEP Board approved an ambitious Research Strategy for the ILEP Federation. This had been formulated by the outgoing ILEP Technical Commission and its promotion and follow-up will now be a priority for the new ILEP Technical Commission whose eight members were selected by the ILEP Board during the same meeting.

The recent meeting of the ILEP Board selected eight persons, from 21 very strong candidates, to form the next ILEP Technical Commission.

Recently both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) adopted policies to commit Member States to reduce stigma and discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their families. On 21st December 2010 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution on the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and encouraged all relevant bodies to give due consideration to its set of Principles and Guidelines on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons Affected by Leprosy and their Family Members. The guiding principles of WHO’s Enhanced Global Strategy for Further Reducing the Disease Burden Due to Leprosy 2011-2015, envisage countries applying cost-effective methods to improve community awareness, acceptance and involvement to combat stigma and discrimination against persons and families affected by leprosy.

Today, 2nd September 2011, data on leprosy cases collected from 130 countries or territories for the year 2010 was published by the World Health Organization in its Weekly Epidemiological Record.
