FAIRMED

FAIRMED

FAIRMED provides support to the health regions, prefectures and integrated health centres. This assistance consists in helping to sensitise the population to leprosy and strengthen technical capacities (for example in training, providing subsidies for materials and logistics). Another element consists in helping with strategic plans and plans of action. FAIRMED also assists with detection and management of cases of leprosy, not only active and passive case detection, but also follow-up after treatment. Support is also offered for supervision, monitoring and evaluation activities as well as in the interpretation of data.

In 2007 a Programme for the Prevention of Disabilities Due to Leprosy was created with the support of FAIRMED, to help manage disabilities of people affected by leprosy. By early 2010 around 200 people with disabilities caused by leprosy had received training in self-care and had received home self-care kits.

However, the majority of FAIRMED’s support is given to the National Leprosy Control Programme. Activities are similar to those outlined above, but also include the provision of dressings, footwear, prostheses, glasses and crutches.
