Ato Dedo, the 56 year-old from Ethiopia, had leprosy for 15 years when he was young. Today he is running the Bidisimo Hospital for DAHW, their first project. He tells his life story here.

Fatumah belongs to the Gende Kore Women’s Self-help Group of ex-leprosy patients. Fatumah is around fifty years old and like most women in the Group has not had an education. Under the leadership of colleagues from Bisidimo she and more than 30 other poor country women have set up a successful economic co-operative.

Sister Senkenesh Gabre Mariam was named as the 2010 recipient of the Damien Dutton Award in December 2010 for her exceptional work dealing with poverty, HIV-Aids and leprosy. Founder and Director of the Medhen Social Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, this award ranks her with earlier recipients such as Mother Teresa, Stanley Stein, Drs Margaret and Paul Brand and Dr Mitsuda.
