Centre National d’Appui à la Lutte contre la Maladie, CNAM (formerly the
L’Institut Marchoux de Bamako)
The Institut central de la lèpre was built in 1931 inspired by the work of Emile Marchoux (see separate information on Emile Marchoux). In 1944 it became known as the Institut Marchoux de Bamako to honour the memory of Emile Marchoux, who had died the previous year and who had been the first to propose improvements in the treatment of people affected by leprosy.
Initially the Institut central de la lèpre had responsibility for organising and co-ordinating anti-leprosy projects throughout francophone Africa. It became a regional centre for anti-leprosy work, ran training courses and became a centre for clinical and therapeutic research.
Today it is known as the Centre National d’Appui à la Lutte contre la Maladie (CNAM) and has broadened its scope to cover the acquisition of knowledge about a range of diseases including HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, through provision of training and pursuance of research.
