ILEP Activities
The following ILEP Members are supporting anti-leprosy activities in Mozambique:
- Associazione Italiana Amici di Raoul Follereau (AIFO)
- Damien Foundation Belgium (DFB)
- LEPRA Health in Action (LEPRA)
- Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR)
- The Leprosy Mission International (TLMI)
Below are descriptions of some of their typical activities.
The Leprosy Mission International (TLMI)
TLMI’s work in Mozambique is focussed on the northern province of Cabo Delgado. In conjunction with its National Leprosy Programme it helps detect new cases of leprosy, provides training in recognising this disease and helps raise awareness of leprosy through radio transmissions, including the important fact that leprosy is curable. In addition, the Leprosy Mission International supports the work of the Association of People Affected by Leprosy in Mozambique. There are currently 25 groups with approximately 720 members. Together with volunteers they provide health education and help improve leprosy detection and access to treatment. The aim is to help individuals return to their communities. A certain proportion of the income from activities, such as communal farming projects, is given to the Association so it can be used to help others.
LEPRA Health in Action (LEPRA)
LEPRA Health in Action began to carry out anti-leprosy activities in Zambezia at the request of the Mozambican authorities. They have been training field staff and community health workers, raising awareness of leprosy through radio and leaflets and developing prevention of disability programmes for people who have loss of sensation as a result of leprosy.
Associazione Italiana Amici di Raoul Follereau (AIFO)
The Associazione Italiana Amici di Raoul Follereau provides support to the National Leprosy Programme and also the provincial leprosy programme in Nampula, the provincial leprosy tuberculosis HIV programme in Manica and the provincial leprosy tuberculosis programme in Inhambane.

Netherlands Leprosy Relief (NLR)
Much energy is dedicated to strengthening training capacity in Mozambique by Netherlands Leprosy Relief. They have produced and implemented a National Leprosy Manual for everyone involved in the national control programme and their leprosy staff. They regularly provide training courses national for regional and provincial training institutes and students at the medical faculties of the Universidade Catolica de Moçambique, Universidade Eduardo Mondlane and the Universade Lurio with a view to improving the leprosy case-finding and case-holding capacity of Mozambican health staff. They support research by research groups from the provinces of Manica, Zambézia, Cabo Delgado and Nampula.

Damien Foundation Belgium (DFB)
In 2000 the National Leprosy Control Programme asked Damien Foundation Belgium to help in Tete and Sofala. It has concentrated on dispatching drugs and bicycles. Another priority has been to assist with the integration of leprosy services into the general health service of Sofala in particular.
