Examples of Members’ Anti-Leprosy Work

Fondation Raoul Follereau (FRF)

This organisation is supporting the National Leprosy Control Programme in Niger, the main aims of which are to detect people with leprosy and treat them with multi-drug therapy (MDT). Specific goals are to eliminate leprosy in all districts and to reduce the number of individuals who develop grade two disabilities. The activities it supports range from treating patients for leprosy reactions, providing protective footwear, performing reconstructive surgery, training individuals in self-care to training of health workers, monitoring and evaluation, research and working with the community and promoting initiatives such as self-help groups. Together with Caritas, FRF supports the Karakara Clinic in Zinder.

The Leprosy Mission International (TLMI)

TLMI provides support for the International Association for Integration Dignity and Economic Advancement (IDEA) Niger for example by running empowerment workshops to reduce stigma and promote the human rights of individuals who are affected by leprosy. It has been involved with the Danja Hospital, which is the main leprosy referral centre for the whole country, since it was founded by Serving in Mission International (SIM) in 1956. TLMI also assist SIM, or the Sudan Interior Mission, mainly by helping supply anti-leprosy drugs and funding some costs associated with socio-economic rehabilitation activities.
