Founded in 1999, today is the 12th International Day of Dignity and Respect. On this day, people come together to share their own challenges and victories to overcome the stigma and discrimination associated with leprosy.

Dr Pfaltzgraff, who spent many years of his life assisting people affected by leprosy, including through work for ILEP Member American Leprosy Missions, died on 1st March 2010 at his home in Pennsylvania, USA.

Linking community-based rehabilitation (CBR) with disability and rehabilitation and the launch of the WHO, ILO, UNESCO and IDDC guidelines on CBR is the theme of this Conference, which is to be held 26th – 29th October 2010 in Abuja, Nigeria.

“I feel like someone with leprosy” goes the saying of people who feel they are being marginalised. As unhappy as this comparison is, unfortunately – even today in our seemingly enlightened world – persons affected by leprosy are still marginalised and even rejected by their own families. The German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association (DAHW) gives those affected the opportunity to build a new existence – an existence among those very persons who once banished them.
