Asia remains the region with the majority of the world’s leprosy burden.  Of the countries in this region, India alone accounts for over 150,000 new cases each year (although these numbers have dropped dramatically in recent years). Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar/Burma, Indonesia and Philippines all still report new cases numbering in the thousands and in all of these countries there remains a very large number of people living with the disabling consequences of leprosy.
