Damien Foundation Belgium
Damien Foundation has been engaged in anti-leprosy activities in Bangladesh since 1972. It works with the Government of Bangladesh supporting the National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Programme in 14 districts, covering 30 million inhabitants. It is committed to improving the detection of people with these diseases and curing them. To do this, Damien Foundation Belgium runs 163 daily leprosy-TB combined centres and two daily and seven intermittent leprosy centres in 14 districts in Bangladesh. Damien Foundation Belgium has its own training centre in Jalchatra, where it maintains excellent medical treatment.
Damien Foundation Bangladesh has been pioneering in engaging ex-patients in leprosy and tuberculosis control activities. In 2009, for example, cured patients referred 2,475 persons who they suspected of having leprosy, of which 93 were confirmed as having this disease.
LEPRA Health in Action
LEPRA works in the districts of Sirajganj, Pabna, Natore and Bogra supporting and strengthening the government to reduce the burden of leprosy. It assists with disability rehabilitation activities, prevention of disability through the organisation of self-care groups for people affected by leprosy, income generation activities and the provision of information campaigns using plays, talks and film shows that educate people about leprosy so as to remove the stigma around leprosy.
