Examples of Members’ Anti-Leprosy Work:
FAIRMED
In 1975 FAIRMED became involved in the fight against leprosy in Sri Lanka. In 1981 it signed an agreement with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health covering all the leprosy work it assists with. This agreement was revised in 2008. Since 2008, it has been supporting the national Anti-Leprosy Campaign together with Netherlands Leprosy Relief. Their goal is to identify and treat people affected by leprosy, so as to prevent permanent disabilities and lower the incidence of leprosy.
FAIRMED assisted the Society for the Uplift and Rehabilitation of Leprosy Affected Patients and their Families, which provides a disability allowance and packets of milk powder, medicines and second-hand clothes. This Society also provides financial assistance to help these people with housing and amenities, such as building new homes, repairing damaged toilets and obtaining water and electricity.
Netherlands Leprosy Relief
The Netherlands Leprosy Relief, like FAIRMED are supporting Sri Lanka’s Anti-Leprosy Campaign.
The Leprosy Mission International
The Leprosy Mission International supports a rehabilitation and empowerment project for a community in Chullipuram. Besides providing opportunities for community-based rehabilitation and self-help groups, they also support health education and leprosy awareness programmes and the provision of mobile health clinics and rehousing schemes.
