Yemen Leprosy and Tuberculosis Society (YELEP) -
orginally Yemen Leprosy Elimination Society

Established on World Leprosy Day in 1992, through community-based services this non-governmental organisation has been helping to uplift the status of people affected by leprosy who had been marginalised in huts outside the main cities or in the desert and in caves in the mountains. YELEP works together with the relevant authorities to help rid the Republic of Yemen of leprosy and tuberculosis. It does this by:
- offering health and social care to people affected by these diseases;
- raising awareness about these diseases among the general public;
enhancing scientific co-operation and exchange of information among specialists and interested authorities; - providing training to health workers; and
- financing the construction of buildings for people affected by leprosy, training, physiotherapy, laboratory work and administration.
In 2003 YELEP was awarded the Sasakawa Health Prize.
