Priorities
SMHF looks at leprosy as a complex of medical and social/human aspects. Initially it placed a greater emphasis on medical aspects offering cure to endemic countries worldwide. Since the mid-1990s it has been increasingly addressing social and human aspects of leprosy. SMHF believes that a world without leprosy, free from stigma and discrimination, cannot be achieved unless the individuals cured of leprosy enjoy equal and full opportunities as constructive members of the community. SMHF believes in empowerment of individuals, families and communities affected by leprosy, and supports projects to make them economically and socially independent and empowers them through better education and networking. Since 2003, people affected by leprosy have been participating in SMHF's Board meetings. Also since that same year, a representative of Zen Ryo Kyo has been invited to attend the SMHF Board meetings as one of its members.
History
Founded in 1974 by Mr Ryoichi Sasakawa, father of Mr Yohei Sasakawa, the current chairman of The Nippon Foundation, to realise the former's lifelong dream of eradicating leprosy. SJ was first guided by Professor Morizo Ishidate, an outstanding pharmaceutical scientist (known in Japan, as the "Father of chemotherapy for leprosy, tuberculosis and cancer"). It was he who first developed and applied sulphone treatment to leprosy patients in Japan in the early 1940s.
Dr Shigeaki Hinohara, a pioneer cardiologist in Japan, who died at the age of 98, maintained active professional life until his death and was considered a role model in ageing well.
SJ became a Member of ILEP in 1975.
