History
Founded in 1874 as The Mission to Lepers in India, through the inspiration and motivation of Wellesley Bailey, an Irishman who was then a teacher in India. Renamed The Leprosy Mission in 1966. TLM is now an international Christian organisation working towards the eradication of the causes and consequences of leprosy. It is a global network active in over 50 countries across the world, and works hand in hand with governments and with local communities, partner health organisations, local NGOs, local churches, and many others.
TLMI’s mission statement is “to minister in the name of Jesus Christ to the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of individuals and communities affected by leprosy.”
Priorities and Focus
TLMI’s expertise is in the detection, treatment, care, rehabilitation and reintegration of people and communities affected by leprosy. This expertise is passed on to government and health workers through national training programmes, research studies and modelling the work. We also work with community groups and ex-patient groups to encourage them to join together to find ways of being heard and becoming self-supporting.
The international office, based in Brentford, West London, UK, acts as the co-ordinating office for the organisation, dealing with global administration and finance issues. TLMI was a founding member of ILEP.
