During the last half-century, we have been able to help more than half a million of people suffering from leprosy and other diseases of poverty. Today, we work for people who find themselves trapped in a vicious circle of poverty and poor health. And we have adopted a new name: FAIRMED – Health for the Poorest.

On 21st February 2009 the Vatican announced that Blessed Damien will be one of five persons to be canonized at a ceremony presided over by Pope Benedict XVI on 11th October 2009.

Since the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted resolution 8/13 on 18th June 2008 various steps have been taken to ensure that in future discriminatory behaviour towards people affected by leprosy and their family members will be both challenged and changed.

The Government of India has announced a scheme in which both people affected by leprosy and the institutions carrying out reconstructive surgery will be given a specified amount to encourage surgeries and to ensure that patients can comply with all follow-up visits.
