Bernard K. Punikai’a, human rights advocate, musician, composer, Vice-President of the Coalition for Specialized Housing, recipient of one of the first Wellesley Bailey Awards, and IDEA’s President for International Advocacy from 1997-2007, passed away in Honolulu on February 25, 2009.

Nazma Kabir joined LEPRA Health in Action on 6th April 2009 as their Programmes Director and is based in Colchester, Essex, UK. She gained her PhD in Medical Nutrition from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

In the autumn of 2009 Father Damien is to be canonised for his life devoted to people affected by leprosy in Hawaii. In The Legend of St Julian the Hospitaller Gustave Flaubert narrates his fictionalised version of this legend and St Julian’s redemption through caring for someone with leprosy.
