Richard de Soldenhoff is the Netherlands Leprosy Relief's Regional Medical Officer for Eastern Indonesia. Always a "field man", he completes 27 years in leprosy control when he retires at the end of this year.

"It would be nice to say that Graham Greene just appeared one day in Yonda, the leprosy settlement in the Equateur Province of the then Belgian Congo where I was the doctor, stepping off the gangway of the bishop's riverboat as Querry does in A Burnt-Out Case. But Greene did not come unannounced."

Il y a un jour que je suis arrivé à Gihofi, province Rutana au sud du pays, frontalière avec la Tanzanie. On est ici avec une équipe du Programme National Lèpre et Tuberculose, PNLT, pour effectuer une formation/campagne de dépistage actif de la lèpre.

After an invigorating start to the day (walk, bath, breakfast, a dose of the news), I am ready to start work in earnest at 9 a.m. I meet briefly with my Deputy Directors for Finance/Administration and Medical/Technical matters and our Administrative Officer to discuss the day's programme and a few pending matters.
