Dr Ernest Fritschi received the 2006 Damien Dutton Award* for his significant contribution to anti-leprosy work during a function at the Schieffelin Institute of Health - Research & Leprosy Centre in Tamil Nadu, India, at the end of January 2007.

Sabine Fürst joined the Deutsche Lepra- und Tuberkulosehilfe (DAHW) in November 2006 as a Project Officer. She has responsibility for co-ordinating the work DAHW supports in Sudan, Nigeria and North India.

Howard E Crouch died on 8th January 2007. He founded the Damien-Dutton Society for Leprosy Aid, Inc. in 1944, a non-profit organisation based in Bellmore, New York, dedicated to freeing the world of leprosy. He named the organisation after Father Damien, the priest, who cared for people with leprosy on the island of Molokai, Hawaii, and Joseph Dutton, who assisted him. In his book, Damien and Dutton, Two Josephs on Molokai, Howard Crouch tells the story of the friendship between these two.

In his article published in the WHO Bulletin* the epidemiologist Paul Fine argues that leprosy will not disappear soon. He notes too that leprosy research and specialist clinical expertise are still needed.
