Japan passed a Basic Law, designed to protect the rights of people affected by leprosy in Japan and facilitate their full integration into society, in April 2009: the Law on the Promotion of Issues Related to Hansen’s Disease.

The Leprosy Mission Southern Africa has long experience of the realities of the daily lives not only of people affected by leprosy, but also of those with disabilities as a result of other conditions. Since the prevalence of leprosy in South Africa is low, a survey was conducted in 2006 and 2007 with the purpose of discovering gaps in services for people with general physical disability in rural areas.

Commenting on the granting of the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award to the WHO, Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan said: “I am deeply honoured that the World Health Organization has received the Prince of Asturias Award for International Co-operation for its efforts to fight against international health threats and for its leadership in co-ordinating health in a rapidly changing world”.
