Türkan Saylan, a University Professor, who was credited with ridding Turkey of leprosy, died after a long battle with cancer in Istanbul on 18th May 2009, aged 74.

“Reduction of the rate of new cases with grade-two disabilities per 100 000 population by at least 35% by the end of 2015, compared to the baseline at the beginning of 2011” is the new global target for leprosy.

A team of Indian and US scientists has reported in the interactive on-line peer reviewed journal PLoS ONE finding signs of leprosy in a skeleton buried about 4000 years ago in northwest India.

Dr Amal Al Jowder, Acting Director of Health Promotion Directorate of the Ministry of Health of Bahrain, was awarded the Sasakawa Health Prize for 2009 during the 62nd Wold Health Assembly in Geneva.
