Indian Council for Medical Research in Centenary Year

Posted on 6 December 2010 by ILEP

In November 2010 the Indian Council for Medical Research, the research wing of the Indian Ministry of Health, entered its centenary year. Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Minister of Health, has urged researchers not to treat research only as an academic exercise.

At a meeting of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) on 9th December 2010, Shri Azad said “There are a large number of active scientists working in different disciplines of biological sciences and producing good leads. Often these are not translated into products or useable knowledge such as treatment methods. I urge ICMR scientists to put special efforts on translational programmes as the country needs these technologies now and cannot afford to wait indefinitely.”

Dr Vishwa M Katoch, Secretary for the Government of India in the Department of Health Research and Director General of ICMR, explained that the ICMR is working on at least 50 projects to develop treatment for diseases such as cancer, tuberculosis and leprosy.

During the launch of the centennial celebrations of the ICMR, held at the India Islamic Cultural Centre on 15th November 2010, Dr Katoch stated: “Health research for marginalised communities continues to be a priority for the ICMR. He said that the ICMR would continue to focus on marginalised communities and diseases of poverty. He also indicated the intention to start new fellowship programmes, to strengthen partnerships in health research including undertaking collaborative research with other governmental scientific departments.
