Latest Progress Report from Indian Government’s Central Leprosy Division

During the year 2011-2012 according to the National Leprosy Eradication Programme’s Progress Report, 127,000 new cases of leprosy were detected. The data on new leprosy cases during this period indicates 37% of cases are among females, 49% of cases were diagnosed as multi-bacillary leprosy, 3% had a visible deformity and 9.7% of cases were among children.           

In the following States and Union Territories more cases of leprosy were detected than in the previous reporting period: Orissa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, D & N Haveli, Andhra Pradesh, Tripura, Haryana, Sikkim, Nagaland, West Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh Union Territory, Daman & Diu and Lakshadweep Union Territory.

More than 10% of new cases were among children in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, D & N Haveli, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Andaman & Nicobar Island Union Territory.
