Mother Marianne Cope’s Cause for Sainthood Furthered
Posted on 29 July 2011 by
In mid-June 2011 the Vatican approved a second miracle by Blessed Marianne Cope, which has to be examined by theologians and a group of cardinals before being presented to the Pope for approval. She could then be declared a saint.
Mother Marianne, a Sister of St Francis, Syracuse, New York, arrived in Hawaii in 1833 and was assigned to Kakaako branch hospital in Honolulu, which she reformed together with other Sisters. In 1888 Mother Marianne went to the island of Molokai to help Father Damien care for persons affected by leprosy, and continued to look after them following his death in 1889. Father Damien was canonised Saint Damien on 11th October 2009.
The first miracle was attributed to Mother Marianne in 2004. Kate Mahoney nearly died of complications following cancer surgery at Crouse Hospital, but she recovered miraculously as a result of Mother Marianne’s intercession.
The second miracle is attributed to the healing of a woman who was ill with an irreversible fatal health condition, for which no medical explanation has been found. No other details have been yet released.
