Robert Cochrane Fund for Leprosy Extended to Other Diseases

Posted on 18 March 2008 by ILEP

Early in 2008 the Trustees of the Robert Cochrane Fund for Leprosy decided that they would consider applications for funding for research into tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseases including Buruli ulcer as well as leprosy.

Purpose of the Robert Cochrane Fund for Leprosy

This Fund is administered by the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in memory of the leprologist Dr Robert Cochrane, who was a pioneer in the use of sulphone therapy for leprosy patients and was awarded the Damien Dutton Award in 1964.

The Fund is used to finance up to three travel Fellowships each year, to a maximum value of £ 1000 each. It will support travel for:

  • Leprosy workers who need to obtain practical training in field work or in research.
  • Experienced leprologists to provide practical training in a developing country.

Additional Purposes for which Applications Can Now be Submitted

  • Those working on Mycobacterium tuberculosis in any research context (basic science, clinical epidemiology, public health).
  • Those researching any other mycobacterial disease including Buruli ulcer (Mycobacterium ulcerans).

NB:
Preference will be given to leprosy projects. If sufficient funds are available, non leprosy projects will also be considered.

Application forms are available from the Royal Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Completed forms must be received by the Society at least six months ahead of the proposed visit. All applications must be sponsored by a suitable representative of the applicant’s employer or study centre, and agreed by the host organisation. A two-page report on the travel/study should be submitted to the Society within one month of the recipient’s return.
