Sasakawa Health Prize 2009

Posted on 27 May 2009 by ILEP

Dr Amal Al Jowder, Acting Director of Health Promotion Directorate of the Ministry of Health of Bahrain, was awarded the Sasakawa Health Prize for 2009 during the 62nd Wold Health Assembly in Geneva.

The 2009 Sasakawa Health Prize was awarded to Dr Amal Al Jowder for the many initiatives which she has spearheaded at community level and in the Ministry of Health: for the reliable information network she has formed composed of health specialists, representatives from social centres, municipalities, clubs and local schools. She will use the $ 100,000 towards future development work, particularly an education bus that will deliver information materials, a sports bus that will deliver basic sports equipment to remote areas of the country and provide services to geographically disadvantaged segments of the population.

Last year the prize was awarded to the Movement for the Reintegration of People Affected by Hansen’s disease (MORHAN) of Brazil. Other leprosy organisations that have received the Sasakawa Health Prize include the International Leprosy Union in 2006 and the Yemen Leprosy Elimination Society in 2003.

This prize was established in 1984 by Mr Ryoichi Sasakawa, Chairman of the Japan Shipbuilding Industry Foundation and President of the Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation.
