Posted on 4 June 2009 by
Commenting on the granting of the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award to the WHO, Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan said: “I am deeply honoured that the World Health Organization has received the Prince of Asturias Award for International Co-operation for its efforts to fight against international health threats and for its leadership in co-ordinating health in a rapidly changing world”.
This award recognises the importance of global health. It will provide further inspiration and motivation to all involved with the WHO and its partners as they create a healthier world in which disease burden is reduced as far as possible, especially among the poorest and most vulnerable.
The Fundación Príncipe de Asturias awards prizes annually for the arts, literature, social sciences, sports, technical and scientific research, communications and humanities and international co-operation.
