Monitoring & Evaluation of Leprosy Control in India in Post-Elimination Era

Posted on 17 January 2008 by ILEP

The Government of India recently published its report of a Workshop it held in Chennai, India, 5th - 6th November 2007. Experts from the Indian National Leprosy Eradication Programme, the World Health Organization, the National Institute of Epidemiology in Chennai, the WHO Collaborating Centre for Leprosy Research and Epidemiology, as well as State Level Programme Managers and other international experts reached the conclusions and made the recommendations outlined in their report about the future of monitoring and evaluation of leprosy control in India.

The group agreed the focus should now be on sustaining leprosy control and quality care for leprosy patients and provision of referral services. They unanimously agreed that present day interventions do not permit consideration of strategies for leprosy eradication. One of the recommendations was to remove the term ‘leprosy elimination’ from the programme dictionary.
