Realising the MDGs for Persons with Disabilities

Posted on 1 December 2009 by Mr Douglas Soutar

The 3rd December marks the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disability. The theme this year is focussed on making the Millennium Development Goals inclusive of people with disability.

To this end a draft resolution entitled “Realising the Millennium Development Goals for Persons with Disability” (A/C.3/64/L.5/Rev.1) was adopted by consensus and without amendment by the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly during its morning session of 10th November 2009. The resolution had 105 sponsors and co-sponsors.

The draft resolution was introduced by the Republic of Tanzania and calls upon the implementation of the MDGs to be accessible to all, and highlights the importance of data and statistics on persons with disabilities in regard to MDG implementation. The MDGs are due to be reviewed in 2010 and this will provide an important opportunity to press for greater inclusivity.

The Resolution also covers issues relating to integrating disability issues into development work, including making it inclusive of and accessible to persons with disabilities; the importance of the participation of persons with disabilities in policymaking and development work; the exchange of information on disability and disability policy; and the building of knowledge bases of data and information about the situation of persons with disabilities that could be used to make development work disability-sensitive.

ILEP is one of the 22 members of the International Disability and Development Consortium (IDDC). This Consortium supports the inclusion of persons with disabilities in 100 countries around the world and promotes development and the realisation of the human rights of all

ILEP Members and its representatives have joined forces with those who are approaching governments and urging them to enable persons with disabilities to participate as agents and beneficiaries of development, particularly in all efforts aimed at achieving MDGs, by ensuring that programmes and policies:

  • eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • achieve universal primary education
  • promote gender equality and empowerment of women
  • reduce child mortality
  • improve maternal health
  • combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  • ensure environmental sustainability and
  • develop a global partnership for development
