Toolkit for Measuring the Quality of Leprosy Services
Posted on 13 August 2010 by
Members of the ILEP Technical Commission have developed a toolkit to help assess the quality of leprosy services. This is now available from the ILEP website free of charge in the form of ILEP Technical Bulletin 17.
Dr Paul Saunderson, Medical Director of American Leprosy Missions and ILEP Technical Commission member, took the lead role in the drafting of this toolkit and the selection of the most suitable indicators.
Five indicators are recommended and include those outlined in the WHO’s Enhanced Global Strategy for Further Reducing the Disease Burden Due to Leprosy 2011-2015 and its Operational Guidelines:
- The treatment completion rate
- The proportion of disability grade two amongst new cases
- The proportion of patients who develop new disability during multi-drug therapy
- Assessing the views of a sample of patients
- The existence of a checklist for supervision
Regular measuring of leprosy services using these indicators could give a good indication of the quality of these services and help identify areas for improvement and enhancement.
