WHO Informal Meeting on Rifampicin Resistance

Posted on 1 May 2007 by ILEP

The emergence of drug resistance is a cause for concern and a threat for any infectious disease intervention programme. An informal consultation was held  in Agra, India to look at rifampicin resistance in the treatment of leprosy.

For leprosy, a chronic disease with social stigma, drug resistance poses a serious impediment at a stage when there is a dramatic decline in prevalence due to intensive and concerted chemotherapy intervention made by the global community. To effectively meet the challenge of containing the disease and sustaining the declining leprosy trend, it is essential to keep a vigil on the drug resistance scenario at many vulnerable settings. This can be done by drug resistance surveillance through an appropriate clinical, field and laboratory support system. The informal consultation held from 30 December - 1 November in Agra, India was planned to address these issues.
