On 21st December 2010 the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted
a resolution on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons Affected by Leprosy and Their Family Members.

Sister Senkenesh Gabre Mariam was named as the 2010 recipient of the Damien Dutton Award in December 2010 for her exceptional work dealing with poverty, HIV-Aids and leprosy. Founder and Director of the Medhen Social Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, this award ranks her with earlier recipients such as Mother Teresa, Stanley Stein, Drs Margaret and Paul Brand and Dr Mitsuda.

The Enhanced Global Strategy for Further Reducing the Disease Burden Due to Leprosy 2011 – 2015 and its accompanying Operational Guidelines will assist leprosy-endemic countries in developing their own country-specific strategies and plans of action for the next five years to sustain and provide quality services to individuals and communities that need them.

More than a hundred heads of universities have endorsed The Nippon Foundation’s 2011 Global Appeal about the important role education has to play in lessening stigma and discrimination towards persons affected by leprosy.

2011 marks the beginning of a new five-year strategic period for ILEP, the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations. Its latest strategy will help keep it on track towards achieving the Federation’s aspirational goal of a world without leprosy.
