Since the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted resolution 8/13 on 18th June 2008 various steps have been taken to ensure that in future discriminatory behaviour towards people affected by leprosy and their family members will be both challenged and changed.

Evidence of resistance to rifampicin, the most important component of MDT, which is used to treat and cure people with leprosy, has prompted the World Health Organization’s Global Leprosy Programme to embark on an initiative to set up a collaborative sentinel surveillance system to monitor drug resistance in leprosy.
