Commenting on the granting of the 2009 Prince of Asturias Award to the WHO, Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan said: “I am deeply honoured that the World Health Organization has received the Prince of Asturias Award for International Co-operation for its efforts to fight against international health threats and for its leadership in co-ordinating health in a rapidly changing world”.

At the Fourth Global Appeal to End Stigma and Discrimination Against People Affected by Leprosy held in London on Monday 26th January 2009, Mr Yohei Sasakawa called for people to stop using the word “leper”.
