On 14th September 2011 the Honourable President Smt. Pratibha Patil gave assurance that she will look into the issues faced by persons affected by leprosy and help them to lead a stigma-free, honourable and purposeful life and also try for total elimination of leprosy from the country. This assurance was given to a high level delegation led by Shri Ram Naik, former Petroleum Minister.

Recently both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) adopted policies to commit Member States to reduce stigma and discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and their families. On 21st December 2010 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a Resolution on the elimination of discrimination against persons affected by leprosy and encouraged all relevant bodies to give due consideration to its set of Principles and Guidelines on the Elimination of Discrimination against Persons Affected by Leprosy and their Family Members. The guiding principles of WHO’s Enhanced Global Strategy for Further Reducing the Disease Burden Due to Leprosy 2011-2015, envisage countries applying cost-effective methods to improve community awareness, acceptance and involvement to combat stigma and discrimination against persons and families affected by leprosy.

As part of its International Conference to celebrate its 50th Anniversary, ILEP Member the Associazione Italiana Amici di Raoul Follereau, will be holding a Workshop on 21st October 2011, in conjunction with the Italian Network on Disability and Development, on Italy’s commitment to the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the field of development co-operation.
