World Leprosy Day was created in 1954 by Raoul Follereau “so that people affected by leprosy could be cared for like all others who are ill and so that that those in good health could be cured of their absurd and often criminal fear of this disease and those who are affected by it”.

The 3rd December marks the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disability. The theme this year is focussed on making the Millennium Development Goals inclusive of people with disability.

Mr Vijaykumar Pannikar, who has been Team Leader of the World Health Organization’s Global Leprosy Programme since March 2005, retires at the end of November 2009. In a rare free moment, Dr Pannikar kindly agreed to an interview. Here follow his thoughts and reflections shared during that conversation.
