Dr R Ganapati, Director Emeritus of the Bombay Leprosy Project in Mumbai, died in hospital on Sunday 13th November 2012. His enthusiasm for promoting leprosy work never waned and his loss is deeply felt by all who knew him and especially by all those persons with leprosy for whom he cared so deeply and for whom he worked so tirelessly.

On Wednesday 25th January 2012, on the Eve of Republic Day, the President of India, Pratibha Patil announced awardees of the country’s highest civilian awards, the Padma Awards. Among those recognised for their exceptional contributions to social work was Dr P K Gopal for all he has done to help persons affected by leprosy.

On 14th September 2011 the Honourable President Smt. Pratibha Patil gave assurance that she will look into the issues faced by persons affected by leprosy and help them to lead a stigma-free, honourable and purposeful life and also try for total elimination of leprosy from the country. This assurance was given to a high level delegation led by Shri Ram Naik, former Petroleum Minister.

An amendment to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act of 2000 was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 19th August 2011, which will stop the practice of separating children with diseases from other occupants of juvenile homes.

Some persons with impairments due to leprosy in Tamil Nadu are being denied the disability pension by the State Government, which is currently authorising payment of such pensions only to those who meet the eligibility criteria of an old law, although there is a more recent act whose eligibility criteria encompasses more persons.
