Founded in 1999, today is the 12th International Day of Dignity and Respect. On this day, people come together to share their own challenges and victories to overcome the stigma and discrimination associated with leprosy.

A resolution on mainstreaming disability in the development agenda was negotiated by governments during the 48th Session of the Commission for Social Development last month. This resolution is important because it is the first of its kind to address the inclusion of disability in new mechanisms.

15 world business leaders signed a message proclaiming their support for the principle of social integration and economic empowerment of people affected by leprosy in Mumbai on 25th January 2010 in the lead-up to World Leprosy Day on 31st January 2010.

World Leprosy Day was created in 1954 by Raoul Follereau “so that people affected by leprosy could be cared for like all others who are ill and so that that those in good health could be cured of their absurd and often criminal fear of this disease and those who are affected by it”.
