The Leprosy Mission England and Wales is delighted that their advocacy campaign has resulted in the Home Office and UK Border Agency acknowledging the need to change their medical guidelines in relation to leprosy. On 13th March 2012 a Home Office spokesperson told them that: “Having leprosy is not a ground for refusing a visa or entry into the UK. I understand that in most cases any risk of onward infection can be addressed within a few days of commencing treatment. As such, any grounds to refuse an application will have subsided.”

In Nigeria, there has been a progressive improvement in the situation of leprosy; however, there are still a significant number of new leprosy cases reporting for treatment with visible deformities (WHO Grade two disabilities) . Based on data notified by the state programmes, grade two disabilities among newly detected leprosy cases has remained unacceptably high at about 20% for the past five years. This suggests a lack of awareness of leprosy in certain pockets in our communities and/or that leprosy-related stigma continues to prevent individuals from seeking treatment.
