On 1st April 2009 Jan van Berkel succeeded Kommer Braber as the new Director of Netherlands Leprosy Relief.

On 17th January 1909, the “San Francisco de Borja” Sanatorium was opened to take care of leprosy patients, who had been suffering alone, isolated by a society fearful of this disease. It played a key role in the elimination of leprosy in Spain.

Yasmin Entwistle was promoted by the late Rene Vargas, Programmes Director of LEPRA Health in Action, to the role of Programmes Officer for Asia, which she took up in January 2009.

During the last half-century, we have been able to help more than half a million of people suffering from leprosy and other diseases of poverty. Today, we work for people who find themselves trapped in a vicious circle of poverty and poor health. And we have adopted a new name: FAIRMED – Health for the Poorest.

The Nippon Foundation and the Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation were jointly awarded the 2008 Damien Dutton Award at a ceremony on 10th October 2008.
